What is the Fishermen Expansion?


This scenario introduces fish as a new resource, obtained through fishing grounds and the lake hex. These fish tokens aren't traded like traditional resources; instead, they act as powerful action tokens.

How to catch fish:

Fish tokens are acquired during the production phase. There are two main ways to hook these aquatic treasures:

  • Fishing Grounds: When the production roll matches the number on a fishing ground tile, settlements adjacent to that tile receive one fish token, while cities get two!
  • Lake Hex: The lake hex, replacing the desert, offers additional fishing opportunities. Roll a 2, 3, 11, or 12, and any settlement or city adjacent to the lake will reel in a fish token (cities get two).

Each fish token displays 1, 2, or 3 fish. This indicates the "value" of the token and how many fish you'll spend when using it for an action. You can only hold up to 7 fish tokens at a time. If you exceed this limit, you must exchange one of your existing tokens for a random new one from the supply. This adds a strategic element, as you might gamble on trading a lower-value token for a bigger catch!

Ye Olde Old Boot

Beware ye olde boot! Hidden amongst the fish tokens, this unwelcome surprise means you'll need an extra victory point to win. You can try to pass the boot to another player with an equal or greater number of victory points, but if you're in the lead, you're stuck with it!

Spending Your Catch (Actions):

Fish tokens are your currency for special actions. The more fish you spend, the more powerful the action:

  • 2 Fish: Banish the robber off the island!
  • 3 Fish: Steal a resource card from another player.
  • 4 Fish: Take any resource of your choice from the bank.
  • 5 Fish: Build a free road.
  • 7 Fish: Draw a free development card.


Winning the Game:

The game ends when a player reaches 10 victory points. Remember, if you're holding the old boot, you’ll need 11!
